About

How I fell in love with Finance

I was originally planning on becoming a doctor. Then I discovered the financial industry.

So why didn't I simply become a doctor?

Throughout most of high school, I was near certain I’d studing medicine right now. That all changed. Not instantly, but gradually. After taking a placement test in the 8th grade, I became one of three high school freshmen in my class to take AP Biology. During sophomore year, I took Biotechnology Concepts and Forensics to learn more about the medical field and its intersections with technology. In junior year, I took Honors Anatomy and Physiology, through which I memorized the names and functions of every bone, almost every muscle, and so much more throughout the year. Everything about me seemed perfectly in line to go into medicine, so what changed?

A lot of self-reflection. Throughout the years, as much as I wanted to love and build a geniune passion for medicine, it simply felt forced. Whether it be familial pressure, or my own sense of obligation to continue to pursue the career I dedicated countless hours towards, my mind was no longer in it and my heart never was. And when picking a career to stick through for another half-century, it would be nice to have both.

Okay, maybe not medicine. But why finance?

By the end of junior year, I was back to square one. I hadn’t found a single career which would interest me, but I had a very long list of careers that certainly wouldn’t. With college applications right around the corner, I needed to decide on something; I needed a plan for the future. Immediately. I picked up multiple podcasts, centered around investing and building wealth. This introduced me to real estate investing. And not only could I have definitely said this was something I was passionate about, I showed it in every way. With a sense of urgency, I started doing as much research on this topic as possible, and even formed an LLC for the purposes of this new venture. But real estate was just the start.

My interest in investing did not stop with real estate. I learned more about the stock market and created my own investment portfolio, in which I continue to invest weekly. Market research seemed intriguing to me, and thankfully, it’s an integral part of almost every career in Finance. So which would I be picking? To be honest, it’s still very early for me to make such a decision. But there’s one thing I can tell you, which is that I love deals. Big deals. The world of M&A, whether it be from the buy-side or sell-side, is fascinating to me. I strive to build upon my knowledge in that field so that sooner or later, I can put it to use. Now that would be a big deal. It would be nice to have my mind and heart leaning towards the same profession. Now, I can finally say that I have both.

Skills

Financial Modeling

One of the most crucial skills required in the finance industry is building a three statement model. With coursework at my university, as well as certificate programs I’ve taken, I’m able to create fully linked three statement models.

Real Estate

As a co-founder and financial manager of my own real estate investing company, I’ve developed a lot of technical knowledge about the real estate market, different investment strategies, and generating wealth with houses.

Sales

Being able to sell yourself or your services to others is highly beneficial in the financial industry. With my experience at various sales jobs, including at Apple, I’ve been able to significantly develop my skills in revenue generation.
